Three-Time Olympic Medalists May Turn Pro

Olympic boxing has been a staple in the Summer Games since 1904, and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were no different. The boxing tournaments took place from July 24th to August 8th, 2021, at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan and featured some of the world's best boxers.

One of the most interesting storylines in Olympic boxing is the decision by some boxers to turn professional after winning three or more Olympic medals. This is a relatively rare occurrence, as most Western boxers typically participate in a single Olympic tournament before turning pro. However, there are a few boxers who have chosen to stay amateur and compete in multiple Olympics in order to achieve their goal of winning three gold medals.

One of the most famous examples of this is Cuban boxer Teófilo Stevenson, who won three Olympic gold medals in 1972, 1976, and 1980. Stevenson was one of the most dominant boxers in the world during his career, and he is widely considered to be one of the greatest boxers of all time. However, he never turned professional, and he retired from boxing in 1984.

Another boxer who has chosen to stay amateur is Ukrainian boxer Vasyl Lomachenko. Lomachenko won two Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012, and he is currently one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world. Lomachenko has said that he plans to compete in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, and he is expected to be one of the favorites to win the gold medal.

It remains to be seen whether Lomachenko will turn professional after the 2020 Olympics. However, if he does, he will join a select group of boxers who have won three or more Olympic medals and then gone on to have successful professional careers.
